The 43rd Kent State Folk Festival opens with Celebration of the Music of Puerto Rico

The 43rd Kent State Folk Festival kicks off seven days of performances with a concert featuring Puerto Rican musical treasure Edwin Coln Zayas and friends on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 8 p.m. at the Kent Stage, located at 175 East Main Street in downtown Kent, Ohio. The evening presents a panorama of Puerto Rican instrumental and vocal music and dance and is suitable for all ages. This is Coln Zayas first appearance in Kent. Tickets for the concert are free for students with a valid ID.

Coln Zayas, a master of the jbaro style of Puerto Rican roots music, will be joined by Noel Velzquez and Bill Coln Zayas from Puerto Rico; members of Rondalla Puerto Rico from Dayton; Orlando El Mostro Santiago from Elyria; Northeast Ohios Grupo Isla del Encanto folkloric dance troupe; and Noraliz Ruiz Caraballo (a graduate student at Kent State University). In September of this year, Coln (a virtuoso on the cuatro and the tiple) was awarded a prestigious National Heritage Fellowship, the countrys highest honor in folk and traditional arts.

Born in the central mountain town of Orocovis, Coln Zayas has traveled the world introducing audiences to his islands musical traditions. Similar to the Cuban music featured in the documentary Buena Vista Social Club, Puerto Ricos traditional music is a blending of Spanish and African musical elements mixed with a tropical flavor. Typical instruments include the cuatro (a 10-string instrument similar to a large mandolin) and the tiple (a smaller instrument with 5 strings). Much older than the better known salsa, msica jbara (much like the old-time music of Appalachia) has been kept alive for centuries by inhabitants of Puerto Ricos central mountains, passing songs down from generation to generation.

The concert includes a reception at intermission featuring traditional pastries by Clevelands Lelolai Bakery and is sponsored by the Gerald H. Read Center for International and Intercultural Education.

CLEVELAND The Spanish American Committee (SAC) is proud to announce the 2^nd Annual Noche de Gala fundraiser Noche de Gala Tropical! The Gala will take place Friday, November 20 at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel (24 Public Square), 6:00 p.m. 1:00 a.m., and will feature Latin Grammy award-winning artist, Milly Quezada and her orchestra. CULTURE-CUBA: The Times, They Are A-Changin

HAVANA, Apr 7 (IPS) - Topics that are taboo in Cuba, absent from media coverage and missing in the political discourse were nevertheless present in debates at a congress of intellectuals who advocated a greater role for criticism in society, and more room for dialogue and participation.

"This is one more sign that the country is changing. Analyses are much more realistic, and theres a shift in attitude among officials when they face criticism," a participant at the Seventh Congress of the Cuban Writers and Artists Union (UNEAC) told IPS.

"Not only was the congress critical of systems that used to be virtually untouchable, such as Cubas public education system, but that criticism has come from people in high positions, and has been well received by the people moderating the debates," added the intellectual, who preferred to remain anonymous.

For his part, Alfredo Guevara asked "Can primary, secondary and prep schools properly educate children and adolescents and thus lay the foundation for the future as they are at present, governed by misconceived criteria and practices that ignore elementary pedagogical and psychological principles and violate family rights?"

The "new" curricula reflect improvisation or "a lack of design" in present Cuban society, said Guevara, one of the veteran cultural leaders of the Cuban revolution. A solution, he argued, must involve "fundamental corrections."

"Sound solutions cannot be built on the basis of dogmas, obstinacy, lack of knowledge of reality, or ignoring the warning messages provided by experience and coming from the people," said Guevara, who founded ICAIC, Cubas film institute, in 1959.

"UNEAC must help build the Cuba of today. The country, in effect, is accepting that what was neither convenient nor prudent yesterday is necessary today," said Havana city historian Eusebio Leal, who added that the changes being experienced by the country today are not "cosmetic," but profound.

Although it was off-limits to accredited foreign correspondents on the island, the Mar. 1-4 congress was extensively covered by the national media, which devoted pages of print, hours of broadcasting and space on Internet sites to the main speeches.

UNEAC, which was founded in 1961 and has over 8,500 members, faces the challenge of reviving its democratic character and role as a channel for dialogue between writers and artists and the rest of society, aspects that according to the main report produced by the congress have been largely lost since the 1990s.

The cultural congress, the first to take place in Cuba since Fidel Castro stepped down, coincided with the implementation of a set of government measures intended to eliminate unnecessary prohibitions and restrictions, stimulate production and open up new options for the population, but within the framework of the countrys socialist system.

Although the Cuban media avoided mentioning the spontaneous debate that broke out among intellectuals in early 2007, and it is not yet known whether it was discussed in the congress, it is a safe bet that the spirit of the so-called "e-mail war" was alive and present at the meetings different commissions.

An important measure, related to that debate, is the proposal to create a working group attached to the presidency of UNEAC, to monitor aspects of "institutional control and censorship and to follow up on specific cases that may arise."

"Most conflicts over publicly circulated works arise because appropriate, respectful dialogue is not established in time between officials and the artists, who quite rightly feel committed to the integrity of their work," said critic Helmo Hernndez.

He also proposed a UNEAC commission "to watch for and study any signs of discrimination, not only racial but also based on gender, religion or sexual preferences."

"Casting an Afro-Cuban actor, or even five or 10, in important roles in a television serial does not necessarily mean that an open debate about diversity is being held, nor is the problem of race portrayed in depth by their mere presence," said playwright Norge Espinosa, who added that the same is true in the case of sexual diversity.

The analysis went to the essence of present-day Cuban society. "We must delve into and debate not only what socialism means, but also, most importantly, how to make it an attractive and culturally desirable goal," said essayist and poet Vctor Fowler, one of the participants in last years e-mail debate on cultural freedom.

In Fowlers view, socialism must be transformed into "a pleasant way of life marked by an extremely wide spectrum including lifestyles, sexual identities, entertainment, folk practices, religious forms, open spaces for people to use, and new forms of interpersonal communication."

Becoming more attractive is a "categorical imperative" for "a social process, in this case a socialist revolution that is already half a century old and has, in addition to external enemies, the contradictions that the process itself has generated in its progress, and the attrition that wears down so much strength," said Fowler.

Writer Fernando Martnez Heredia said that the prevalence of "ingenuous or superficial antithesis" in the world of ideas, like the false opposition between "native and foreign," is "very damaging," as is "blindly lashing out, or alternating between hard and soft positions" in the field of practical measures.

There is clearly much to be done. The congress also debated the role of the media in Cuba, including the banality encouraged by todays television programming, the silence of the national press on some aspects of modern Cuban reality and the limited access to the Internet.

"We talk about a culture of debate, but we dont have spaces where the practice of debate is systematically facilitated," said Rafael Hernndez, editor of the cultural journal Temas, who also spoke of the need to "create spaces for truly inclusive discussions on the Internet."

Among the problems discussed were hard currency-only sales of Cuban music and films, the lack of venues for dance music and singing, meagre royalty payments for authors and the lack of resources which threatens Cuban television production.

Prior expectations which have not been reflected in the national press also include the need to legalise independent music and film and TV productions, which have been ushered in by new technologies and the limited response and support from state companies.

Agencia de noticias ANSA, 3 de octubre de 2009 - El rgimen de facto que encabeza Roberto Micheletti est interesado en un dilogo para resolver la crisis poltica de Honduras, pero sin sentarse a negociar con el presidente constitucional Manuel Zelaya y los miembros de la Resistencia contra el golpe Estado, sealo la agencia de prensa ANSA

Es un dilogo entre los mismos golpistas, dijo Juan Barahona, coordinador del Frente Nacional de Resistencia contra el golpe de Estado, al referirse a los dilogos que estn promovindose en diferentes instancias pblicas y privadas.

El candidato presidencial del gobernante Partido Liberal, Elvin Santos, dijo que se est intentando abrir el dilogo desde siete instancias, antes de la visita a Honduras, el prximo mircoles, de la misin de cancilleres de la Organizacin de Estados Americanos (OEA).

Ya se encuentra en Honduras una delegacin de avanzada, que arrib el viernes, en preparacin de la llegada de la misin, que encabezar el secretario general de la OEA, el chileno Jos Miguel Insulza, pero Micheletti dijo ayer que se reuni con Insulza en la base militar estadounidense de Palmerola, unos 80 kilmetros al norte de Tegucigalpa, pero no revel el da ni lo que tratraron. S, vino a Honduras, estuvo aqu en Palmerola el otro da, dijo Micheletti, pero medios locales informaron que el encuentro se realiz esta semana y con la participacin del embajador de Estados Unidos en Honduras, Hugo Llorens.

El gobernante de facto dijo que con Insulza se habl de todo, absolutamente de todo, menos de la restitucin de Zelaya, por eso digo yo que la tranquilidad est volviendo al pas y nos alegra, agreg.

El asesor del secretario general de la OEA, John Biehl, quien forma parte de la comisin de avanzada, dijo que estamos en una fase de que las cosas van a comenzar a mejorar en todos los sentidos.

Esta semana tambin visit Honduras una misin de diputados de Brasil, para verificar la situacin de la embajada brasilea, donde est refugiado el presidente Zelaya desde el 21 de septiembre y rodeada por numerosos militares y policas, que impiden el paso de personas.

Los parlamentarios brasileos se reunieron con Zelaya, Micheletti y representantes del Congreso Nacional y de la Corte Suprema de Justicia, para tener la seguridad que la sede diplomtica de Brasil no ser violada por las fuerzas militares y policiales.

El viernes los legisladores republicanos de Estados Unidos, el senador Jim DeMint y los congresistas Doug Lamborn, Aaron Schock y Peter Roskam, se reunieron con los magistrados de la Corte Suprema de Justicia, las autoridades del Tribunal Supremo Electoral y candidatos presidenciales, para hablar en torno a las elecciones generales previstas para el prximo 29 de noviembre.

Juan Barahona dijo que a los golpistas slo les interesa que no haya obstculos para realizar las elecciones generales, con lo cual, segn ellos, legitimaran el golpe de Estado y los responsables quedaran impunes.

Indic que para el Frente Nacional de Resistencia son innegociables la restitucin de Zelaya y la instalacin de una Asamblea Nacional Constituyente, para reformar la Constitucin.

Los golpistas se han rasgado las vestiduras porque el presidente de Costa Rica, Oscar Arias, mediador en la crisis de Honduras, dijo que la Constitucin de Honduras es la peor en la faz de la tierra, pero l dijo una gran verdad, expres el dirigente de la Resistencia.

Seal que la actual Constitucin de Honduras la hicieron los golpistas en la poca de la guerra fra, para salvaguardar los intereses de ellos, de la clase de los oligarcas, por eso es que la posicin del presidente Arias es congruente con la de la Resistencia, de que se necesita una nueva constitucin.

Subray que para empezar el dilogo, Micheletti debe derogar el decreto que hace una semana suspendi las garantas constitucionales, y que es utilizado para cerrar medios de comunicacin y reprimir las manifestaciones de la Resistencia, que desde el golpe de Estado, el 28 de junio, todos los das realiza movilizaciones en las calles.

Dijo, adems, que los golpistas deben entregar el poder a Zelaya, porque sino este conflicto va a continuar, nosotros vamos a continuar la lucha con o sin decretos represivos, no importa el tiempo que dure.

Carlos Eduardo Reina, otro dirigente del Frente Nacional de Resistencia contra el Golpe de Estado y acompaante de Zelaya dentro de la embajada de Brasil, dijo que no puede haber dilogo mientras el rgimen de facto mantiene al presidente constitucional como en un campo de concentracin en el interior de la sede diplomtica, impidindole recibir personas para buscar una salida negociada a la situacin del pas.

La Habana, 3 de octubre de 2009 - (AIN) - Miki Takebe, vicepresidenta de operaciones de la Filarmnica de Nueva York, asegur que sus integrantes estn decepcionados con la decisin del gobierno de EE.UU. de impedir su actuacin en La Habana.

Definitivamente queremos ir y espero que esto se pueda resolver en el futuro, asegur Takebe va telefnica a Cubadebate, que publica hoy en su pgina digital.

La orquesta, que haba organizado dos conciertos en La Habana para finales de octubre y principios de noviembre, anunci el jueves que haba postergado la visita a Cuba por las dificultades creadas por el bloqueo.

Esa medida que aplica Washington a la Isla sanciona con fuertes multas a los ciudadanos norteamericanas que se atreven a viajar sin expresa autorizacin del Departamento del Tesoro.

Miki Takebe estuvo en Cuba recientemente acompaando a Zarin Mehta, director ejecutivo de la Filarmnica neoyorquina, para ocuparse personalmente de los detalles para los conciertos.

Visit los lugares donde se alojaran los msicos en La Habana, examin la sala de conciertos -el Teatro Amadeo Roldn- y evalu cada una de la necesidades logsticas con la parte cubana.

Alejandro Gum, vicepresidente de Relaciones Internacionales del Instituto Cubano de la Msica, declar por su parte a Cubadebate, que el gobierno de Estados Unidos es el nico responsable de la suspensin de los conciertos de la Filarmnica de Nueva York en La Habana.

Cuba mantiene sus puertas abiertas a la prestigiosa agrupacin si Washington reconsidera su decisin, concluy Gum.

COPENHAGEN, Oct. 2 - Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Summer Olympics, becoming the first South American city to host an Olympics. Rio outlasted Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago in a vote of more than 100 International Olympic Committee members.

Chicago, which President Obama supported with a 10-minute speech to IOC members earlier in the day, was hoping to become the first U.S. city to host the Summer Games since Atlanta in 1996 and the first to host any Olympics since Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Games in 2002. Instead, Chicago was eliminated in the first round of voting. Tokyo was eliminated in the following round.

Judith Ortiz Cofer was born in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico, moved to the United States in 1956 with her family to Paterson, New Jersey. Her family often made back-and-forth trips between Paterson and Hormigueros. In 1967, her family moved to Augusta, Georgia, where she attended Butler High School. Cofer received a B.A. in English from Augusta College, and later an M.A. in English from Florida Atlantic University.

LATINOS MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES CLEVELAND PREVIEW OF THE NEW PBS DOCUMENTARY LATIN MUSIC USA WITH BOBBY SANABRIA

            Cleveland, Ohio Latinos Magazine announced today that it will co-host, along with The Roberto Ocasio Foundation and La Boca Restaurant, a free Cleveland screening of the new groundbreaking documentary, Latin Music USA, on Thursday, October 8, 8pm, at La Boca (5800 Detroit Rd, Cleveland). Bobby Sanabria, 2009 Latin Grammy nominee and noted Latin-music historian who collaborated on the multi-media project and appears in it, will present an episode of the four-part series which will premier nationwide on PBS television over two evenings, October 12 and 19, and on PBS.org/latinmusicusa. The October 8^th program will also include Latin jazz by The Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Project and a guest spot with Bobby Sanabria. This is a free invitation to the public with general seating; to guarantee dinner seating, guests must call for reservations, 216.961.5800.

            Latin Music USA (narrated by actor, Jimmy Smits) is a film about American music. Fusions of Latin sounds with jazz, rock, country, rhythm and blues music with deeper roots and broader reach than most people realize. It is a fresh take on our musical history, reaching across five decades and across musical genres to portray the rich mix of sounds created by Latinos and embraced by all.

            Produced by a world-class team led by WGBH, in co-production with the BBC, Latin Music USA invites the audience into the vibrant musical conversation between Latinos and non-Latinos that has helped shape the history of popular music in the United States, says series producer, Adriana Bosch. Fittingly, the series launches within Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to recognize the contributions of Latinos to the United States and to celebrate Latino heritage and culture. The series features the stories of an extraordinary range of artists, including salsa greats Willie Coln and Marc Anthony; the Latin-inflected sounds found in much of sixties rock and roll, from the Drifters to Motown to the Rolling Stones; jazz fused with Cuban rhythms from Mario Bauz, Machito, Tito Puente and Chano Pozo; the genius of Texas accordion player Flaco Jimnez; Carlos Santana; Linda Ronstadt; the legendary Chicano rock band Los Lobos; megastars Gloria and Emilio Estefan; Ricky Martin and Juanes; Miami rapper Pitbull; reggaetn performers Daddy Yankee and Tego Caldern; and Lin-Manuel Miranda from the Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights.
