Latino Voters: Now is the Time for Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Since last June’s bipartisan vote in the U.S. Senate, comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) has been stalled in the House of Representatives. Now, a broad coalition of immigration reform supporters - including House Republicans - is calling on the Republican leadership to move comprehensive immigration reform forward.

Latino Decisions has collected the most comprehensive and in-depth information about immigration reform and the Latino electorate. In 2013 alone, we have conducted over a dozen surveys of Latino voters. The most compelling findings are highlighted in this brief.


A Latino Priority


In the months following the 2012 election, immigration surpassed the economy as the most important issue among Latino voters, and has remained the foremost priority. When asked specifically about CIR, 78% of Latino voters said it was a very or extremely important issue for Congress to address.

Immigration politics is personal for Latino voters. 67% of Latino voters know an undocumented immigrant, and among those, 51% have undocumented family members. This suggests that immigration reform will remain a priority issue for the Latino electorate until a bill is passed that addresses the millions of undocumented already living and working in the United States.
