Washington, D.C. - Today, Margaret Moran, National President of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization in the country, issued the following statement condemning the remarks of Republican Congressman Steve King of Iowa for making bigoted remarks about DREAM students.

“The sentiments expressed by Congressman King reflect not only his ignorance for the Latino community but also the disconnect that exists today between a Republican Congress and Hispanics,” said Moran. “Congressman King's disparaging remarks reduced young Latinos to mules transporting drugs across the border. His sentiments represent the foulest and most extreme side of a party which prefers hateful rhetoric over a serious discussion of the facts. The Congressman’s sentiments reflect a Congress that refuses to move forward on comprehensive immigration reform - an issue that is widely supported by the American people. As we move forward, we hope that the Republican leadership embraces a more reasonable and humane approach towards the Latino community. Otherwise, they will forever be regarded as the party that denied the full rights of citizenship to the Latino community."
